Why Use Natural Skincare?

Updated: Nov 10, 2018

So what is the hype around natural skin care? Why are half the women in Australia turning to natural products?

The main reason comes down to the harsh chemicals found in common beauty products. According to a study by the Environmental Working Group, woman put an average of 168 chemicals onto their body per day, and men use about 85 different chemicals per day.

How dangerous are these chemicals though?

There has been a lot of research on this topic, and a growing body of evidence is emerging that does suggest a connection to long-term health issues, including cancer and reproductive problems. Carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) are well known to be found in many personal care products.

It is very clear that beauty products derived from natural ingredients provide incredible benefits for both our bodies as well as the environment.

And they actually do work!

When I switched to natural shampoo, I swore it would never lather! And that my hair would never be clean. But it sure did lather! And it has honestly changed my hair washing game. I wash my hair less regularly now, and I am finally managing my problem dandruff.

Other reasons to go natural:

- You know exactly what is going into your body!

- Natural products can work just as well or better than their chemically enhanced counterparts.

- Natural products are less likely to leave your skin red and irritated.

- Chemical filled products can often cause breakouts. Natural products are less likely to do this.

- Natural products are better for the environment! (woohoo!)

Start slowly.

No need to throw out everything you have and start fresh (that sounds very expensive!) Just begin rotating a few products and find whats right for you. Just a few small changes will already reduce your impact on the environment as well as your long term health.

I'll admit myself, I'll probably never go full on 'cold turkey' when it comes to chemically enhanced beauty products, but I will do my best to cut down and change my habits where I can. And I think that's a great way for everyone to look at it.

Don't forget, your skin is the largest organ in your body. It can absorb around 60% of fluids that it comes into contact with. Treat it kindly, and you will be greatly rewarded.
